SumUp is a mobile payment processing service that is similar to the product sold by Square in the U.S. The company was started in 2012, and merged with Payleven in 2016. The two brands merged but kept the name SumUp.

In 2018, SumUp began offering a 3g-powered card reader so customers can use the credit card reader without wifi.

In 2019 SumUp acquired the e-commerce business Shoplow in an effort to expand their online offerings.

In 2021, the SumUp card was released, so customers can get fast access to their payments.

SumUp is a European-based company that serves at least 34 different countries including the U.K. and the U.S. Their international headquarters are in London and the CEO is Daniel Klein.

The company has a U.S. base located in Boulder, CO.

SumUp has a one-time fee for setup and the card reader in addition to a flat monthly rate for processing transactions. There is no contract, no early termination fees, and no PCI Compliance fee.

SumUp Setup & Support


SignUp and ordering can take place online or over the phone. The card reader is shipped to the customer’s door and setup can take place without an in-person visit. In order to use the card reader all the customer has to do is download the app on their phone and begin processing payments.

SumUp has a non-accredited account on Better Business Bureau for the Boulder, CO location. The complaints and reviews reflect the company’s U.S. branch only. BBB gives SumUp an A- rating. However, the account has earned only 1 of 5 stars based on customer reviews.

There are currently ten negative reviews of the company on BBB. Almost all reviews complain of a similar problem, that the company sold them a card reader and then they weren’t able to use the card reader because it was buggy, or because their company was deemed “restricted” and they would not continue to do business with them. The reviews also complain of poor customer service.
