Before Vantiv absorbed it, National Processing Company was one of the largest merchant account providers in the United States. It serviced over 200,000 accounts. NPC was founded in 1979 by Chris Williams and had more than 500 workers. It services mainly retail and B2B businesses. Its headquarters is in Louisville, KY.

National Processing Company (NPC) Overview

NPC generally services retail and B2B companies. It focuses on various types of businesses, but these are generally the ones that NPC does business with more often than not. NPC doesn’t seem to have a set pricing model available for the public: the rates and fees involve custom pricing set on a business by business basis. Its industry focus is in retail and B2B.

However, their overall reputation is on the more negative end: they have a large variety of complaints. Many merchants state that they feel ripped off or that NPC gave them unexpected fees. Some other merchants still complain about the termination fee of the contract, as well. NPC was involved in a series of mergers throughout its life since 1979, resulting in it being traded several times. Its latest acquisition put it in Vantiv’s hands--now Worldpay, which itself was bought out by Fidelity National Information Services (FIS).

National Processing Company (NPC) Products & Services

Point 1: Debit, Credit, and Mobile Processing

Like most merchant account providers, NPC offers and continues to provide debit cards, credit cards, and mobile payments. This can be done online, in-person with a POS device, or with a card-reader or a swipe terminal. This is among its most essential services, but since NPC serviced so many accounts, it’s clear that the company was secure and efficient at processing the payments it received through its many channels.

Point 2: Check Processing Services and Merchant Cash Advances

NPC also offers to check processing services. For many customers who go to a business, they would prefer to pay with a check instead of a card, and it is in this situation that this service is useful. NPC offers merchant cash advances, which can help some businesses that are seasonal or have high and low periods. Being able to sustain employee salaries and costs while business is low can help a smaller business survive while waiting for its points of higher revenue and profit.

Point 3: Equipment Leasing, Online Payment Gateway

Finally, NPC offers equipment leasing as well as an online gateway. Rather than just taking credit and debit card numbers and entering them manually, it provides equipment to process payments on-site. While it can’t be said whether these devices are POS equipment, card-readers, swipe terminals, or something else, these are among the most common of these devices and are the most likely kinds of equipment that National Processing Company would offer.

National Processing Company (NPC) Advertising & Sales

NPC advertises and sells its services through a variety of different channels and options. It usually uses outside sales agents, partnerships with other independent organizations involved in sales, and telemarketing. These three strategies allow NPC to advertise and sell its service to a wide variety and amount of businesses.

NPC is an ISO of Chesapeake Bank and Woodforest National Bank. There have been several complaints about the nondisclosure of essential contract terms and specific strange fees before the account is set up. NPC's practices seem to be fairly honest and there isn't anything negative particularly outstanding besides these complaints.

NPC offers multiple different kinds of pricing, depending on what the merchant or business needs the most. These seem to be delivered based on either a case-by-case basis or under different umbrellas of business types; all catered to what the merchant requires.

National Processing Company (NPC) Pricing, Rates & Fees

NPC has a varying contract with an average length of three years with different fees and rates depending on what kind of business is signing the contract. This is sometimes common across various merchant account providers. Some business owners may benefit from this, but it can also be a downside because there is less immediate transparency about the offered rates and fees. They have various costs associated with their grades, including a monthly $25 minimum, a $99 PCI Compliance annual fee, and a $20 a month account fee.

There is also an early termination fee of $250 if the merchant cancels the three-year contract early.
