Payment orchestration is a middleware layer that routes payment transactions across multiple payment service providers (PSPs) from a single integration. Instead of connecting individually to Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, or a regional acquirer, a merchant connects once to an orchestration platform, which then decides in real time which PSP processes each transaction.
The orchestration layer sits between the merchant checkout and the PSPs. When a customer submits a payment, the orchestration platform evaluates configurable rules (customer country, currency, card BIN, transaction amount, PSP availability, historical approval rates, cost per transaction) and selects the optimal PSP for that specific transaction. If the first PSP declines or is offline, the transaction fails over to a backup automatically.
Enterprise-focused providers include Primer, Gr4vy, Spreedly, IXOPAY, and Corefy. Larger commerce platforms such as Salesforce Commerce Cloud have built limited orchestration into their checkout stack. Some acquirers offer orchestration as an add-on service.
Transaction routing (also called load balancing) directs transactions across multiple merchant IDs belonging to the same business, typically inside a single processor gateway. Payment orchestration directs transactions across entirely different payment service providers. The two solve different problems. Transaction routing solves MID capacity, chargeback isolation, and processor-level redundancy. Payment orchestration solves PSP redundancy, geographic reach, and vendor concentration risk. A large merchant can use both at once, with an orchestrator selecting a PSP and that PSP applying its own transaction routing rules across its MIDs.
Small and mid-market merchants processing under $10M annually rarely benefit from orchestration. The integration cost, monthly platform fee, and operational complexity outweigh the marginal benefit of PSP-level failover. For most SMBs, a single well-chosen PSP or a merchant account with transaction routing is a better fit.
