What is a Member Bank?

Member Banks (aka "Sponsor Banks" or "Acquiring Banks") are members of the VISA / MasterCard Association.

They are sometimes called sponsor banks because they sponsor ISOs to be a part of the VISA / MasterCard Association.

They are sometimes called acquiring banks because they acquire the transactions from consumers, through merchants, and are responsible for settling payment transactions.

Essentially, the member bank's role in the entire merchant processing equitation is to police/enforce the VISA & MasterCard regulations.

How do member banks enforce VISA & MasterCard regulations?
