Payment Gateways (aka "Gateway Providers", "Gateways") are essentially a piece of software that allows merchants to accept payments online. They connect online shopping carts to merchant accounts.
The gateway facilitates the communication between the credit card information and the authorization network, and leads to the merchant account.
There are many different shopping cart software options for website owners to choose from.
Each shopping cart is its own piece of software, and thus has its own codebase, functionality, integrations, etc. Similarly, every merchant account has its own set of integrations.
So, how do we make sure that with all these new shopping carts popping up, and tons of options to choose from, that they will actually work with your merchant account?
The answer: Gateways.
