Adyen Overview

Adyen says that it was built around the goal of providing “frictionless” payments to merchants at a global scale. The company is especially good for merchants with established businesses who are looking to expand into new markets.

Adyen markets itself as a “full-stack” payment service provider, which means that it handles every aspect of a merchant’s payment processing needs. The company lives up to this with its impressive array of product offerings. Adyen provides omnichannel payments, marketplace payments, POS equipment, POS software, and more.

The company also uses contracts and costs that are favorable towards merchants. Adyen prefers an interchange-plus pricing model and varying rates for different types of payment methods. The company favors a month-to-month contract with no cancellation fee.

Adyen Products & Services

Global payment processing with local customization options

One of the key differentiating features for Adyen’s service is its ability to process a variety of payment methods at a global scale. The company makes it possible for merchants to expand into new marketplaces without having to worry as much about how they will accept payments in a new currency. Adyen enables merchants to reduce their fees and increase their authorization rates for international transactions.

Omnichannel payments

Adyen also makes it possible for merchants to accept payments anywhere they interact with their customers. For example, the company’s omnichannel payment solutions work in online stores, in mobile applications, and in brick-and-mortar stores. The data collected from all of these channels are then integrated back into a single system to make the reporting process easier.

POS equipment and software

Merchants can also get their POS equipment and software through Adyen. The company has a variety of hardware options available, including portable and handheld options. And merchants who use Adyen have several different POS software to choose from.

Adyen Advertising & Sales

Adyen doesn’t use independent sales agents to market its products, which is good for merchants, as the practice is regularly associated with poor sales experiences. Instead, the company markets its services through web-based advertising and strategic partnerships. Adyen has an in-house sales team that it relies on to sign up new merchants.

Adyen is also very straightforward with its pricing. It lists many of the fees and contractual terms that merchants should expect on its website. The company isn’t known for advertising deceptive rates or terms. In this regard, they’re much better than many other merchant account providers.

Adyen Pricing, Rates & Fees

Adyen uses an interchange-plus pricing structure for all of the payments that it processes. Generally, merchants are charged the interchange rate + $0.12 per transaction. But your fees can be a bit higher when you process credit card payments, or Google and Apple Pay transactions through Adyen. For these, Adyen charges a 3.95% rate plus $0.12 per transaction.

The good news for merchants is that Adyen doesn’t charge a PCI compliance fee or any monthly “membership” costs, as many other merchant account providers do. However, the company does have a monthly minimum of $120 or 1,000 transactions.

Adyen Contract & Terms

Adyen’s contracts are some of the most merchant-favorable in the industry. The company uses a month-to-month agreement with no early termination fee. So it’s pretty easy for a merchant to try Adyen without having to commit to a long-term deal. Instead, either party is free to cancel the agreement by providing at least 60 days’ notice in writing.

It’s also worth mentioning that Adyen tries to steer clear of high-risk merchants as much as possible. So if a merchant has too many chargebacks in a month, then the company may invoke a contractual right to eliminate the merchant agreement immediately. The threshold for this is typically about 0.5% of the total transaction volume.
