PCI Non-Compliance Fee

Companies that deal with credit card information must be PCI compliant.

Any company that does not meet the PCI DSS standards is considered non-compliant and may be charged a PCI non-compliance fee.

What is PCI Non-Compliance?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) are a list of standards set forth by credit card companies.

Any business or company that processes credit card information must abide by the PCI DSS or risk being in non-compliance.

These security standards include basic security protocols like using firewalls, implementing antivirus software, and following encryption standards.

When a company has met all PCI DSS they are considered PCI Compliant.

To be PCI non-compliant means the company has failed one or several of the standards.

Risks of PCI Non-Compliance

When a company is non-PCI compliant it means they have failed one or several of the PCI DSS.

This puts the company at risk of security breaches, hacking, and lost or stolen data.

In addition to the danger brought on by not meeting security standards, not being PCI compliant can mean getting slapped with a PCI non-compliance fee.

While credit card companies don’t issue PCI non-compliance fees, credit card processors may issue PCI non-compliance fees to businesses they work with. This is to encourage all businesses they work with to become PCI compliant.

Although credit card companies don’t issue fees for being non PCI compliant, they do charge fees for security breaches. Thus the risks of being non PCI compliant can be costly.

PCI non-compliance fees can range between $10-$30 a month.

Not all merchant accounts or processors charge PCI non-compliance fees.

Businesses that handle credit card data will benefit from greater security by becoming PCI compliant, even if they do not get issued a fine.
