Hiring Mill

A hiring mill is a term used to describe a company that experiences high worker turnover.

In practice, the company may hire many short-term or part-time workers, without expecting their workers to work at the company for a long time.

The company has decided to not invest in their employees by offering training or suitable pay. Instead, they expect their workers to burn out quickly and simply replace them when that happens. This practice can also mean workers are underpaid and overworked.

Merchant Account Hiring Mills

Some merchant accounts earn poor reputations as hiring mills, especially when it comes to their sales department.

It is a common tactic for merchant accounts to outsource their sales, hiring independent agents to make sales for them instead of having an in-house team that is well-trained and well-educated in the product.

Hiring independent salespeople to sell their products can mean lower overhead. It can be a good way to get their product out in as many channels as possible.

However, they also run the risk of salespeople using aggressive sales tactics, or not properly understanding the product they are selling. Some customers complain of being misled, or of being sold items they didn’t want or need.

Independent sales agents may aggressively upsell customers to get a higher commission for instance. This can result in negative reviews for the company.

While many talented salespeople are working independently, there is also less oversight of their selling practices. Any company that employs this tactic runs the risk of numerous customer complaints and refunds.

They also run the risk of little to no loyalty to the company, as independent salespeople can leave at any time. This contributes to their reputation as hiring mills.

How to Avoid Hiring Mills

When it comes to selecting a merchant account, potential customers should consider the nature of the sales and customer service team and ideally choose a merchant account with in-house sales and customer service teams.
