Address Verification System (AVS) is a fraud prevention system that helps to limit chargebacks & fraud.
AVS is the system which verifies that the card holder's billing address matches the billing address associated with the credit card account. AVS is widely used by major credit card companies to prevent card-not-present (CNP) fraud.
"AVS codes" or "AVS response codes" are single-letter codes sent to the merchant during a credit card's authorization process.
If the address provided by the consumer doesn't match the one on file with the issuing bank, the AVS code will indicate this mismatch of addresses, and the transaction may be declined. If the addresses match, the AVS code will indicate a match and the transaction will be authorized.
The entire AVS process typically takes only a few seconds, and completely out of sight from the consumer.
