How To Choose The Best Light Ballast

What Is The Purpose Of A Light Ballast?

Lighting fixtures are very important parts of our homes. We rely heavily upon lighting to provide us with adequate illumination during the day and night. Lighting fixtures are essential components of many rooms within our houses, including bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, etc. In addition to providing general room illumination, lighting fixtures serve other purposes, such as accentuating certain features of a room, creating ambiance, adding beauty, and improving safety.

Types of Lights Fixtures

There are two main types of lights fixtures: incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps. Incandescent bulbs are by far the most common type of bulb found in residential lighting applications today. Fluorescent lamps, however, are still widely used in commercial settings because of their long-lasting qualities. Both types of bulbs emit visible light, which we perceive as white light. However, each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

Incandescent Bulbs

The primary advantage of incandescent bulbs is that they produce relatively little heat compared to other types of bulbs. As a result, incandescent bulbs last longer than other types of bulbs. Another benefit of incandescent bulbs is that they are inexpensive. Unfortunately, incandescent bulbs also have several drawbacks. First, incandescent bulbs generate more heat than other types of bulbs. Because of this, incandescent bulbs require frequent replacement due to overheating. Second, incandescent bulbs consume large amounts of electricity. Third, incandescent bulbs contain mercury, which poses health risks to children who might accidentally ingest the metal. Finally, incandescent bulbs cannot be dimmed. All these factors contribute to why incandescent bulbs are becoming increasingly obsolete.

Fluorescent Lamps

Fluorescent lamps are considered safer alternatives to incandescent bulbs. Unlike incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lamps do not contain mercury. Also unlike incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lamps can be dimmed. Additionally, fluorescent lamps are generally more efficient than incandescent bulbs. One drawback of fluorescent lamps is that they must be replaced frequently. If a family of four consumes 200 W/Hr of power, then the average household needs 400 W/Hr of power.

Ballasts

In order to operate a light fixture, there must be a source of electricity. Typically, this source of electricity comes from either a wall outlet or an electric generator. Electric generators are typically powered by gasoline engines. Wall outlets, on the other hand, receive electricity directly from utility companies via high voltage lines. Electricity enters the house through a breaker box located near the entrance door. From here, the electricity travels throughout the house using wires called conductors. AC currents flow in cycles lasting 0.5 seconds. During each cycle, the polarity of the current reverses direction.

Wattage

LED bulbs last longer than conventional bulbs and consume far less electricity. Furthermore, they emit no harmful chemicals and are virtually maintenance free.

Ballast

". Most older houses were built using 120 volt circuits. As a result, most modern appliances operate on 220 volts. Since most newer homes are wired with 240 volt circuits, you'll need to convert your existing fixtures so they can run on the higher voltage. Many manufacturers sell conversion kits that include a transformer and switch. Once installed, you simply plug the kit into your wall outlet and turn on the circuit breaker. Lamp Color Temperature

Color temperature refers to the color of light emitted by a bulb. Most modern fluorescent lights emit cool white light while older style bulbs emit warm white light. Warm white light tends to create a softer glow than cool white light. Cool white light is generally preferred for reading, whereas warmer colors are best suited for tasks requiring concentration. Some people prefer warm white light because it creates a brighter environment. Others dislike the yellowish tint associated with warm white light.

Bulb Shape

There are three main categories of bulbs available today: screw base, bayonet base, and G9 base. Screw base bulbs are the oldest form of bulb and are still widely used today. Bayonet base bulbs are becoming increasingly popular due to their ease of installation. G9 base bulbs are designed specifically for recessed applications. All these different bases have advantages and disadvantages.

Warranty

Most manufacturers include a warranty on their products. Warranties vary greatly depending upon the manufacturer. Some warranties cover only the product itself while others extend coverage to other components within the unit. Make sure that the warranty covers everything that could go wrong with the unit.

Safety Rating

UL ratings range from 1 to 100. Products rated above 50 are considered safe enough for public consumption. Ratings below 10 indicate that the product poses serious health risks.

Energy Efficiency

This factor relates directly to price. Energy efficiency varies based on the size of the room being lit and the number of lumens required. Lumen measurement is measured in terms of foot candles. Foot candle measurements are determined by multiplying lumen output by four. Therefore, a 60-lumen bulb produces 120 ft. of light per hour.

Mounting Options

Many lighting fixtures are sold preassembled. Preassembly saves money and makes installation easier. However, mounting options differ between brands.

Different Types of Light Ballast

Lighting has become more important with the increase in technology. The lighting industry has been growing rapidly since the invention of electric lights. Today there are many different kinds of light bulbs available. Each type of lamp has its advantages and disadvantages.

Types of Lighting

DC lighting uses electricity directly; AC lighting uses electricity to create an oscillating voltage which creates light by passing electrons back and forth between electrodes. Both types of lighting require a power source. In addition, both types of lighting emit visible light. However, each type produces light differently. For example, HIDs produce white light while LEDs produce colored light.

Ballasts

The ballast is the part of the circuit that regulates the flow of electricity into the bulb. Without a proper ballast, the light will flicker and dim. Some ballasts contain circuitry that converts 120 volt household line voltage to 12 volts. Others convert 240 volt line voltage to 24 volts.

Fluorescent Lamps

These lamps consist of three parts: glass tube containing gas, filament inside the glass tube, and a base. Fluorescent lamps are very efficient because they operate using only 1/10th the amount of electricity compared to other forms of lighting. Most homes today still use these lamps because they provide good quality illumination and last longer than traditional incandescent lamps.

Halogen Bulbs

This kind of bulb consists of a quartz envelope filled with inert gases, a tungsten filament, and a reflector. Halogen bulbs are commonly used in outdoor applications where heat dissipation is required. Because of their long lifespan, low maintenance costs, and ability to withstand extreme temperatures, they are widely used in commercial buildings.

In contrast to conventional incandescent and fluorescent lamps, HID lamps generate intense amounts of ultraviolet radiation. This makes them useful for indoor sports stadiums, warehouses, and industrial settings. HID lamps are expensive and must be installed professionally.

Metal Halide Lamp

This type of lamp contains a sealed arc chamber within a quartz envelope. Metal halides are typically used in large areas such as parking lots, factories, and warehouses. Their efficiency is comparable to that of fluorescent lamps.

Mercury Vapor Lamp

Mercury vapor lamps are designed to give off bright white light. Mercury vapor lamps are most commonly found in offices and schools. They are inexpensive and easy to install.

Sodium Vapor Lamp

This lamp emits yellowish orange light. Sodium vapor lamps are mainly used outdoors. They are inexpensive and easy to maintain.
