Different Types Of DC Fans

1 Permanently Magnet DC Motors

These are the cheapest kind of DC fans.

They consist of two parts: rotor and stator. Rotor has permanent magnets attached to its outer edge while stator consists of coils wound around iron core. As electric current flows through coil, magnetic field is generated inside the iron core. Magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the rotor causing rotation of the rotor. In order to stop rotation of the rotor, there must be no electrical current flowing through the coil. If there is no current flowing through the coil, then magnetic force between the rotor and stator becomes zero. So, the rotor stops rotating.

2 Electromagnetic Induction DC Fans

This category includes squirrel cage DC fans. Squirrel cage DC fans are very popular because they provide maximum airflow rate compared to other types of DC fans. However, they require more power consumption than other types of DC fans.

3 Reluctance Motor DC Fans

The third category of DC fans include reluctance motors. Reluctance motors are generally used where high torque is required. Reluctance motors are relatively expensive due to higher number of components involved.

Types of DC Fans

There are mainly four types of DC fans: axial flux, radial flux, hybrid, and brushless. Each type of DC fans has advantages and disadvantages.

An axial flux DC fan is designed so that the blades rotate along axis of the shaft. Axial flux DC fans are mostly used in applications where low noise level is important. Due to design of the blade, axial flux DC fans produce lower amount of noise compare to other types of DC fans. But, axial flux DC fans cannot generate large volume of air flow.

A radial flux DC fan rotates around central axis of the shaft. Radial flux DC fans are widely used in commercial applications. Because of the design of the blade, radial flux DC fans produces higher volume of air flow compare to axial flux DC fans. Also, radial flux DC fans generates lesser noise compare to axial flux DC fans.
